The fashion world is already buzzing with anticipation for the “2025 Met Gala”, set to take place on May 5, 2025. The theme for the 2025 Met Gala is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, a title that pays homage to the sartorial brilliance and creativity of Black men throughout history.
The accompanying Costume Institute exhibition will explore the evolution of Black dandyism, highlighting how Black men have historically used fashion as a means of self-expression and resistance. This will be the first time in the Gala’s history that the theme will fully focus on designers of color, making it a milestone for both the event and the fashion world.
Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s seminal 2009 book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity“, the 2025 exhibition will feature a diverse array of garments, paintings, photographs, and other artifacts that explore how fashion has shaped Black identities from the 18th century to the present day.
The exhibition will be divided into multiple themes, including “cosmopolitanism,” “caricature,” and “ownership.” It aims to highlight various iterations of Black dandyism in both the U.K. and USA.
Approximately 250 garments and accessories will be displayed, showcasing historical pieces alongside contemporary designs from influential designers such as Pharrell Williams, Virgil Abloh, and Grace Wales Bonner.
The 2025 Met Gala will be co-chaired by a prestigious and stylish group of Black men from across the entertainment and sports industries. The confirmed co-chairs are:
- Pharrell William: The Grammy Award-winning musician and designer, who recently made waves with his debut collection for Louis Vuitton, will bring his unique sense of style and cultural influence to the event.
- Colman Domingo: The Emmy Award-winning actor, known for his bold fashion choices and eclectic style, will also lend his creative energy as a co-chair.
- A$AP Rocky: Known for his headline-making Met Gala appearances alongside partner Rihanna, the rapper and fashion icon will be instrumental in bringing the evening’s theme to life.
- Lewis Hamilton: The Formula 1 champion, who has been a vocal advocate for diversity in fashion, will use his platform to highlight Black designers and their contributions to menswear.
- LeBron James: The NBA legend and style icon will serve as “honorary co-chair”. As a global figure who has made a significant impact on both sports and fashion, James’ presence elevates the prestige of the 2025 Met Gala.
While the official dress code for 2025 has not yet been announced, it’s expected that attendees will be inspired by the concept of Black dandyism—a term that refers to the use of immaculate tailoring, wit, and elegance to subvert societal expectations.
The 2025 Met Gala promises to feature ensembles that are not only visually stunning but also politically and culturally charged, as the theme touches on deep historical narratives of power, race, and identity.
Given the star power of the co-chairs and the relevance of the theme, the guest list is expected to include some of the most prominent figures in fashion, music, film, and sports. Past Met Galas have seen the likes of Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Zendaya grace the red carpet, and it’s safe to assume that 2025 will draw an equally illustrious crowd.
Mark your calendars for May 5, 2025, when the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art will once again be transformed into a runway of artistry, elegance, and cultural significance.
