Majeda Kassir Bisharat - MY Event Design
Q. What inspired you to transition from running a high-end boutique, La Coquette, to founding MY Event Design?
So how did I become a wedding designer & planner? Well believe it or not it all happened accidentally. I studied Fashion Design in Italy and became the 1st Fashion Designer in Jordan. While being a fashion designer, I always used to host parties and dinners at my home that I designed and styled but I never thought of it professionally until a friend of mine approached me to plan her daughter’s engagement party. I was very excited, as I wanted to give the guests a unique experience to remember. Ever since, I never looked back.
Q. How do you feel about being one of the global designers at the Table Design Exhibition?
I feel honored to be recognized as one of the global designers at the Table Design Exhibition. This opportunity allowed me to showcase my work on an international platform, fostering connections with talented designers worldwide. I am grateful to celebrate global design diversity, and engage in a collective conversation that transcends borders and cultures.
Q. Can you tell us about the theme of your table design?
“Welcome To Sultana's Passage!” was the name and theme of my table at the table design exhibition.
A mesmerizing creation that weaves a tale of opulence, tradition, and personal significance offering a magnified lens into the world of a Sultana. This design encapsulates the essence of Turkey, evoking the spirit of a Sultana's regal journey, while paying homage to the designer's personal connection to nature and a beloved garden.
Sultana strolls through her immersive, enchanted green empire. She passes by twinkling candles on her way to her throne, savoring the magical shades of green that reflect the color of life and symbolize hope for a brighter future.
Q. MY Event Design is a family-owned business. How does working with your daughter Sewar, contribute to the vision and success of the company?
If I were to describe us two in one sentence I would say that she’s my yin to my yang.
When Sewar saw that my business was growing, and growing fast, she did what any daughter would, she quit her prominent position at Royal Dutch Shell, and decided to jump right in to be by my side. She joined MY Event Design in 2015 and brought with her a savvy and fresh new outlook on the business aspect of things. She has, thus far, incorporated her visionary approach to the company, redesigning and instilling the company’s vision and mission, and leading MY Event Design’s expansion throughout the Middle East and Europe.
Sewar introduced young blood to the company, stressing on the importance of having good PR and exposure to the work that I have executed in the years prior. She understands the importance of acquainting designers and clients alike with MY Event Design’s event planning and designing capabilities, and there’s no sign of her or MY Event Design slowing down!
Q. Although based in Amman, MY Event Design covers events across the Middle East and Europe. How do you adapt your designs to different cultural contexts and preferences?
MY Event Design recognizes the rich diversity of cultural contexts and preferences across the Middle East and Europe. Our approach to adapting designs for events in various regions is rooted in our commitment to understanding and respecting the unique characteristics and traditions of each culture. By combining our creativity with a deep respect for cultural diversity, MY Event Design strives to create unforgettable events that celebrate and honor the unique traditions of each region we serve.
Q. As a woman in the event design industry, can you share insights into the challenges you've faced throughout your journey? How have these challenges shaped your approach to your work?
Certainly, it's important to acknowledge that experiences can vary widely among individuals, and not every woman in the event design industry faces the same challenges. However, one of the common challenges that I encountered is Work-Life Balance: Balancing work and personal life can be challenging for anyone, but societal expectations and norms may place additional pressure on women to manage multiple roles and responsibilities.
Q. Reflecting on your experience, are there any mistakes you made in your career that turned out to be valuable lessons? How did you overcome them, and what advice would you give to aspiring event designers to avoid similar pitfalls?
Advice for aspiring event designers: Embrace mistakes as learning opportunities, prioritize effective communication, plan meticulously, value vendor relationships, and ensure fair pricing. These lessons contribute to growth and success in the events field.
Q. For aspiring individuals looking to enter the event design field, what key qualities or skills do you believe are essential for success? Are there any specific pieces of advice you would offer to those starting their journey in this industry?
Based on my personal experience, my advice to individuals embarking on a career in this dynamic industry is to cultivate patience, diplomacy, and flexibility. Approach each day as an opportunity for new learning, recognizing that education is a continual process. Strive to acquire at least one new piece of knowledge daily, no matter how small, to expand your expertise and promote continuous improvement.
Consistent research is crucial to staying well-informed about industry trends. Seek inspiration from both significant and subtle elements, paying meticulous attention to the smallest details. Embrace creativity, originality, and resourcefulness, taking calculated risks and avoiding replication. Instead, foster innovation by thinking outside conventional boundaries.
Above all, my foremost advice for newcomers is to establish and cultivate your own brand—a manifestation of your vision, values, and unique experiences. This will set you apart and contribute to your long-term success in the industry.
Q. Looking ahead, what are some goals or aspirations you have for MY Event Design? Are there specific types of events or projects you hope to take on in the future?
MY Event Design's future goals and aspirations include diversifying its event portfolio, expanding internationally, staying innovative in design concepts, incorporating sustainability initiatives, integrating technology, forming strategic partnerships, engaging in community initiatives, maintaining a client-centric approach, creating signature events, and seeking industry recognition. These objectives reflect the company's commitment to growth, excellence, and positive contributions to both the industry and the communities it serves.
